Supervising Psychiatrist

Main Tasks:

  • ​Consultant ​will serve as the Technical Consultant (Supervising Psychiatrist). The consultant is expected to work the equivalent of six-eight hours per month providing technical oversight of the Zahle CMHC staff psychiatrist. The Consultant will hold case-based discussions with the staff psychiatrist, monitor psychotropic prescription data, and respond to calls from the staff psychiatrist or Team Leader on urgent cases. Additionally, throughout this time period the Technical Consultant is expected to provide periodic evaluations of the staff psychiatrist, regularly attend CMHC tehcnical meetings and respond promptly to all electronic communication.

 

Scope of Work:

The main responsibilities of the Technical Consultant (Psychiatrist) include the following:

  • Provide regular, case-based supervision of the staff psychiatrist (by phone or in person).
  • Provide technical guidance on specific, urgent cases, as needed (by phone or in person).
  • Conduct periodic audits of patient files.
  • Coordinate closely with the MHPSS Project Coordinator and the Technical Consultant (Psychologist).
  • Regularly attend CMHC technical meetings.
  • Report to the MHPSS Project Coordinator and the NMHP on severe medication complications and critical incidents.
  • Monitor and provide feedback on the overall clinical performance of the staff psychiatrist.

 

Qualifications:

  • Education/experience
    • MD plus the completion of a postgraduate program in psychiatry
    • Lebanese medical license
    • 5-10 years of clinical practice and at least 3 years of supervision is a plus
    • Experience in psychiatric practice with displaced persons / culturally diverse groups
    • Personal interest in community mental health
    • Previous NGO experience is preferred

 

  • Skills
    • Advanced knowledge of psychotropic medications
    • Familiarity with the List of Psychotropic and Neurological Medications Recommended by the National Mental Health Programme For Prescription in Humanitarian Setting
    • Familiarity with IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support In Emergency Settings and mhGAP
    • Good command of English (speaking & writing). Fluent in spoken Arabic
    • Good communication and teamwork skills.
    • Ability to work independently.
    • Adaptability and flexibility in working within complex and dynamic environment.
    • Excellent skills in presenting complex technical information in an easily comprehensible way.

 

Deliverables:

  • Technical Supervision of the Zahle CMHC Staff Psychiatrist
    • Conduct case-based discussions with the staff psychiatrist, approximately 1 - 1.5 hours per week via telephone or at the CMHC (4 - 6 hours/month)
    • Provide technical guidance to the staff psychiatrist, on an as needed basis, to address emergent concerns (< 1 hour/month)
    • Monitor and provide feedback on the overall clinical performance of the staff psychiatrist, including prescribing habits and building healthy patient relationships.
  • Attend regular technical meetings at the CMHC (1-2 hours/month)
  • Timely and regular updates, including a monthly report, to the NMHP and FPS MHPSS Project Coordinator on the supervision and any urgent issues via email and/or telephone.

 

Location of Work: ​Beirut with occasional visits to Zahle

 

Period of Performance: Present to December 31st, 2019

 

Level of Effort:

  • Technical supervision/support for the staff psychiatrist at the Zahle Community Mental Health Center (CMHC).
  • Part-time consultant (6-8 hours/month)
