Responsibilities:
1. Build financial support for the organization by soliciting major gifts and general support funds from donors in the MENA region;
2. Research, identify, cultivate, service and solicit new prospects, existing donors and Beirut Committee members;
3. Create and track donor lists, fundraising and expenses;
4. Direct the Beirut Committee and work closely with the Committee’s leadership, and manage the Beirut Executive Committee and the sub committees;
5. Help establish other new city committees in the region;
6. Liaise with, service and cultivate committee members and prospects;
7. Plan and oversee the production of fundraising, outreach and cultivation events in the MENA region, including HRW’s Annual Voices for Justice Dinner in Beirut and Kuwait;
8. Collaborate with HRW’s Committee Directors across North America and Europe and help direct special development initiatives in Beirut and the region such as high-level Board events;
9. Represent and communicate the work of Human Rights Watch to existing and prospective supporters including through creating new communication and servicing tools;
10. Assist with promoting HRW’s advocacy initiatives in the MENA region, in coordination with the MENA Division’s Regional Advocacy and Communications Director, Researchers and Deputy Director;
11. Deliver outputs in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development Department;
12. Monitor progress against milestones and deadlines of all outputs that are within the purview of responsibility;
13. Ensure organization-wide coordination and complementarity as well as maintain good working relationships with external partners; and
14. Perform other tasks as may be required.
Managerial Responsibilities:
1. Develop work plans and contribute to the development and outreach strategy for the region;
2. Regularly monitor the budget and ensure that resources are allocated appropriately;
3. Operate in compliance with organizational regulations and rules, including the policies of applicable employee agreements;
4. Establish clear work plans for staff and communicate priorities clearly and effectively. Provide oversight and take responsibility for delegated assignments;
5. Ensure that the workload of the staff is manageable and the reporting lines are clear;
6. Manage and guide staff by listening, having two-way communication, sharing pertinent information, responding appropriately and delegating appropriate responsibilities;
7. Provide appropriate and timely feedback on staff performance and provide guidance, coaching and training, as necessary. Provide guidance and coaching to staff in the supervisory positions;
8. Ensure timely recruitment of vacant positions; and
9. Foresee risks and allow for contingencies when planning; monitor and adjust plans and actions, as necessary.
Qualifications:
Education: A bachelor’s degree in international relations, journalism, law, social sciences or related studies is required. An advanced degree is highly desirable.
Experience: Prior fundraising and management experience is highly desirable.
Related Skills and Knowledge:
1. Significant fundraising experience, with proven success in creating and managing major gifts programs in the MENA region highly desirable.
2. Experience managing high-level donor relationships is strongly desired.
3. Demonstrated experience overseeing large fundraising events is desirable.
4. Ability to present the work of HRW and human rights issues to donors and potential donors is required.
5. Excellent oral and written communications skills in English and Arabic are required. Proficiency in French is a plus.
6. Strong interpersonal skills in order to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with local partners, government officials and external media partners are required.
7. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work under pressure are required.
8. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is essential.
9. Experience presenting issues to the media and policymakers is highly desirable.
10. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases and knowledge of social media are highly desirable.
11. An entrepreneurial spirit and the discipline to work independently, but also the ability to function as a member of a development team is highly desirable.
Other: S/he must be willing to travel frequently within the MENA region as well as to HRW’s European and North American offices.
