Agronomist/Veterinary (local position - Syria)

Working Context: Funded by AICS, under the “Multisectoral emergency and early recovery intervention in response to the protracted humanitarian crisis in Syria) program - AID 013139/01/0, AZIMA project will contribute to improve the living conditions and well-being of vulnerable communities in rural Syria by supporting socioeconomic recovery, food security, and resilience to crisis factors. It aims to ameliorate access to adequate food and livelihoods of at least 400 vulnerable families in Rural Damascus governorate, particularly in the districts of Duma and Babila, through an integrated approach that supports the transition from immediate assistance to the recovery of sustainable livelihoods. The veterinary/Agronomist will be responsible of the technical implementation of the project activities mainly related to the distribution of sheep, fodder, vaccines and equipment to sheep farmers, the follow up, the coordination with veterinary extension centers and MOAAR, in addition to the execution of the training program to these farmers and personnel of the extension centers.

Qualifications, skills and experience:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in agricultural engineering (animal production) or veterinary specialization with at least 10 years’ experience in related field;
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in the technical supervision of activities in the animal production sector.
  • Experience in implementing projects with NGOs;
  • Experience of designing training content, manual and guideline, 
  • Experience in training and follow up after training;
  • Previous experience in Rural Damascus region is a strong advantage.
  • The ability to work under pressure and to meet short deadlines without compromising quality of outputs;
  • Strong communication skills & knowledge in terms of communication, social life in the target area;
  • Experience of engagement with the agricultural sector at local level;
  • Ability to engage varied levels, interpersonal and analytical skills;
  • Knowledge of languages: excellent knowledge of Arabic and English and/or French.

Main tasks:

  • Responsible for the implementation on-site and control of project activities.
  • Draft technical specifications of tender dossiers for purchase of sheep, vaccines, equipment and TORs.
  • Support the procurement team during tenders (clarifications, technical evaluation of bids) and advise on contractor/consultant selection from a technical perspective.
  • Ensure that contracts adequately reflect technical requirements, timelines, quality standards and regulatory obligations.
  • Supervise the quality of goods and support the delivery and follow in the target areas.
  • Support and supervise the vaccination campaign for the distributed sheep.
  • Draft the training schedule, training materials and handouts for the training needed by the sheep farmers and staff of the veterinary extension centers in the selected regions.
  • Deliver the planned training sessions (theoretical and practical).
  • Prepare training sessions files inclusive of the name and description of the topic, the invitation, the lecturer hand-outs, the signed attendance sheets, the evaluation sheets and the photos.
  • Prepare a brief training report with recommendation and submit within 10 days of completion of event.
  • Continuous site visits and follow up with the beneficiaries
  • Prepare reports on the visits of follow up includes the progress, the recommendations, photos, records, and submit it within 10 days of completion of event.
  • Adopt the participatory learning approach in training delivery.
  • Coordinate with relevant stakeholders (beneficiaries, relevant Ministries, relevant international bodies, etc.) and participates in sector working groups if necessary and required.
  • Incorporate feedback received from project team.
  • Constantly interact with the Project Manager in order to resolve related issues to the implementation of field activities.
  • Provide technical inputs to MEAL tools (indicator tracking, post‑implementation monitoring, lessons learned).
