Participatory Field Researcher

 Purpose of Assignment Alert is seeking experienced field researchers to gather qualitative data, and, where possible provide data analysis, in multiple locations across Lebanon. The role will directly support International Alert’s Peace Education project and is a critical role within the project. This position would suit individuals who are experienced in issues of child protection, peace education and young people’s resilience to trauma and conflict. Arabic language skills are mandatory for this position. Experience of working with international NGOs is highly desirable. The initial contract period for the position of field researcher is 01 Dec to 01 Feb but there is possibility of extension into mid-February. Duties and Responsibilities 1.     Conduct primary field research Under the supervision of the Participatory Research Consultant, carry out qualitative data collection in selected locations within Lebanon using methods such as Key Informant Interviews (KIIs); Focus Group Discussions (FGD); participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Where possible, and in line with research ethics protocols and methods, collect relevant information to feed into the monitoring and evaluation of the peace education overall project. Contribute to monthly ‘lessons learned’ workshops with Alert and partners. 2.     Input into research methodology   Provide on-going feedback to Alert regarding utility of existing research methodology design; ensure that methodology is fit for purpose and practical given the context in Lebanon and within each of the sites selected for research.   3.     Management and quality assurance Responsible for working to tight timelines, managing workload to ensure that project objectives are met and to a high standard. Support the effective management of research activities by ensuring data is of high quality and delivered on a rolling in line with project timelines 4.     Liaison and stakeholder management   Create new or use existing relationships with civil society organisations, community groups and other contacts to facilitate research and expand the network of research participants.   Manage any sensitivities and issues that may arise amongst the research participants, partner organisation or local authorities with diplomacy, tact and good judgement.   5.     Analysis and report writing   Where necessary, contribute to data analysis and the production of written case study reports. Travel requirements This post is based in Lebanon and will require extensive travel within the country. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.   ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS Talents The skills, qualifications and experience listed below are important, but we believe that to be great in this role you are likely, first and foremost, to be exceptional researcher, experienced in working on issues concerning young people, particularly in displaced communities. You are skilled at managing diverse stakeholders and are able to handle sensitive topics with maturity and integrity.  You are organised, flexible, knowledgeable about the Lebanese context and able to maintain a positive attitude to your work even when under stress. You will be proactive with a strong sense of initiative and ask questions as they arise. You will be meticulous about details and exceptional at managing your own workload. You will have outstanding levels of integrity and ethics.   Formal training in community-based research methods Proven field research experience in challenging environments  An awareness of practical and theoretical understanding of conflict and peacebuilding issues, especially in Syria and Lebanon Previous experience of working with children and young people Previous experience of working with refugees Comfortable in handling ambiguous and complex situations Proven rigorous attention to detail Excellent stakeholder management and liaison skills; able to influence and motivate individuals in remote locations and challenging environments. Excellent inter-personal, communication and presentation skills (oral and written) Computer literate, in particular Microsoft office and online file sharing programmes. Experience of undertaking research in conflict-affected contexts and producing written outputs A clear commitment to the mission and vision of International Alert Fluency in Arabic, working knowledge of English   DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS Experience of working with international organisations, particularly NGOs Experience of project communications and advocacy Existing network of community-based organizations working with refugees
