Nearly 4 million individuals crossed borders from Sudan into neighbouring countries since the onset of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in April 2023.
In order to capture comprehensive information on cross-border displacement and return dynamics, IOM-DTM Sudan began monitoring key border points and collecting data on return movements from neighbouring countries to Sudan in January 2024.
DTM Sudan field teams have monitored a significant increase in cross-border movements from Egypt to Sudan during the first quarter of 2025: the average number of return movements per month is nearly 7 times higher in 2025 compared to the monthly average in 2024.
Key Updates:
- Between 01 January and 31 March 2025, an estimated 72,039 individuals returned from Egypt, compared to an estimated 42,418 during the entire year of 2024.
- The number of return movements in the first three months of 2025 is nearly double the total number recorded throughout all of 2024.
- The average number of return movements per month is nearly 7 times higher in 2025 than in 2024.
- An estimated total of 114,457 individuals reportedly crossed back to Sudan from Egypt since January 2024.
- Movements were reported at Ashkeet (87%) and Argeen (13%) border crossing points.
- The majority of individuals who crossed back were Sudanese nationals who were initially displaced from Khartoum (71%) and Aj Jazirah (22%).
- Assuming the monthly rate of return movements remains constant, DTM anticipates that hundreds of thousands of individuals may return to Sudan from Egypt within the next six months, depending on evolving dynamics.
