Community Based Education Teacher - Qobayat

SCOPE OF WORK: Class teachers will be working in the provision of education to Syrian refugees children within or in close proximity to ITS (Informal Tented Settlement) locations in Northern Lebanon as part of the International Rescue Committee’s (IRC’s) Community Based Education (CBE) program.. Community Based Education is a model of Non-Formal Education (NFE) where schools are set up in or near ITS camps to bring education to underserved Syrian refugees children who do not have access to other schooling options. Within these community schools, the Lebanese curriculum will be taught for 5 hours a day to classes of approximately 30 students, following the Lebanese academic year. Working in close connection with IRC’s Community Mobilizers, CBE Officers, Parent Teacher Officers, and Teacher Trainers, teachers will receive one week of pre-service training in topics specific to this context (Multi-grade teaching, classroom management, child-centered learning, learning styles, and psychosocial support –Healing Classrooms.) Teachers are expected to teach within this CBE context, with the goal of Syrian students learning at the associated Lebanese grade level. Assessments will be done at the beginning, middle and end of the school year and will determine the learning level and learning materials needed for each student (all textbooks, student and teacher kits to be provided by IRC). Teachers should have a full understanding of the refugee crisis, and be prepared to support and/or refer children with psychosocial needs. Teachers will be teaching the Lebanese curriculum wholly in Arabic language, and should be comfortable in doing so. Supplementary English and French classes will be built into the schooling hours, and teachers should be comfortable teaching basics in these two languages to new language learners. Parent engagement will be critical in addressing the specific needs of these children in this situation. Who this position reports to:  North Lebanon Education Manager RESPONSIBILITIES: 1-     Provide effective teaching to Syrian refugee children, at community based schools (CBEs) in or near Informal Tented Settlements and/or other sheltering premises 5 hours per day, 5 days per week, following the Lebanese MEHE approved curriculum and calendar 2-     Implement child-centered teaching strategies and methodologies, in addition to multi-grade teaching and differentiation techniques in the classroom. 3-     Maintain a safe and effective teaching/learning environment in the classroom. 4-     Enhance parental partnership though proper communication channels with Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs)/ refugees community leaders. . 5-     Implement the MEHE teaching curriculum and enrich content where appropriate, including the production and dissemination of teaching hand outs and activities sheets. 6-     Assess children’s learning achievement, using properly designed assessment tools, both at the beginning of the school year, in the middle of the year, and at the end of the school year, with periodic assessments during the year 7-     Participate in organizing school activities and events and contributing to community school relations through the PTA and with the assistance of IRC staff. 8-     Attend training sessions (pre-service and in-service) designed to improve her/his teaching and classroom performance, with follow-up classroom mentoring and observations by IRC Teacher Training staff. 9-     Agree to be monitored periodically by Syrian PTA staff members for child-centered teaching and general child wellbeing. 10-  Implements a child-safe learning environment without physical punishment. 11-  Demonstrates  her/his   awareness  about the Syrian refugees context and the psycho-social needs of Syrian children, in regards to identifying critical problems and referring children to outside support, if necessary. Professional Standards Class Teachers will be working on service contracts for the IRC. This service contract stipulates that teachers will be working as independent contractors and are not employees of the IRC.  However, while working as a contractor for the IRC, the service provider agrees to follow all applicable IRC policies, procedures and directives in the course of the performance of his/her duties under this contract. REQUIREMENTS: Clear understanding of education in emergencies, including barriers that children face in accessing their right to education. Ability to understand and discuss with supervisors and parents children’s learning problems and psychosocial requirements . Strong ability to organize work, and plan lessons on daily basis, focused on multi-grade class instruction. Evaluation design and implementation for student learning achievement Familiar with remedial education and supportive teaching methods, including scaffolding and group work. Desire to receive and implement professional development/training opportunities. Travel and other requirements: The position will be based in North Lebanon/Akkar
