Background/IRC Summary:
The International Rescue Committee is an international organization specializing in emergency and humanitarian programming. The IRC has been working in Lebanon in 2012, in response to the influx of Syrian refugees in the country. The IRC is currently implementing an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program in the North and Bekaa Governorates.

 

Job Overview/Summary:
ECE Educators will be working on the provision of education to Syrian refugees children within or in close proximity to ITS (Informal Tented Settlement) locations in Northern Lebanon and Bekaa as part of the International Rescue Committee's (IRC's) ECE program. ECE is a model of Non-Formal Education (NFE) to bring education opportunities to underserved Syrian refugee children who do not have access to other schooling options. The IRC works in community learning centers and delivers a curriculum of activities based on MEHE learning standards and objectives. Classes are run for 20-25 students, for 3.5 hours per days, 3 days per week.
Working in close collaboration with the IRC’s Early Childhood Education Officers (ECEOs), educators will receive one week of pre-service training in topics specific to this context, and will be provided with regular mentoring and observation visits from ECEOs and other IRC technical staff, in addition to Parent Focal Points from the communities. Assessments will be done at the beginning, middle and end of the school year and will determine the learning level and learning materials needed for each student (all textbooks, student and educator kits to be provided by IRC).
ECE Educators will be working as part of a team with an ECE Facilitator from the refugee community, and should have a full understanding of the refugee crisis, and be prepared to support and/or refer children with psychosocial needs. The IRC curriculum is play-based and focused on learning centers and exploratory learning for children, supporting early learning numeracy, literacy and social-emotional wellbeing. Educators will be teaching the IRC ECE curriculum in Arabic language, in addition to English or French for stories, and should be comfortable in teaching to new language learners.

 

Major Responsibilities:

  1. Provide effective teaching and facilitation to Syrian refugee children, at ECE locations 3.5 hours per day , 3 or 6 days per week, following the IRC ECE curriculum and calendar;
  2. Implement and follow the IRC standard curriculum and enrich content where appropriate, including the production and dissemination of teaching hand outs and activities sheets;
  3. Implement child-centered teaching strategies and methodologies to support early grade exploratory learning;
  4. Assess children's learning achievement with periodic assessments during the year;
  5. Work as part of a team with the ECE Facilitator in delivering and maintaining a high quality learning environment for ECE students;
  6. Maintain a safe and effective teaching/learning environment in the classroom and its surroundings;
  7. Enhance parental partnership though proper communication channels with Parent Focal Points/ refugees community leaders;

 

Job Requirements:

  • University degree in Social Sciences or Education
  • Work Experience: Minimum of 1 year of teaching experience (either at Primary or ECE/KG level)

 

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies:

  • Clear understanding of ECE programs, including the role of educators in ECE and play based/exploratory learning for ECE-aged children (3-5 years).
  • Ability to understand and discuss with supervisors and parents about children's learning problems and psychosocial needs.
  • Strong ability to organize work and plan lessons on daily basis.
  • Experience delivering curriculums in a play-based, exploratory environment
  • Motivation to receive and follow professional development/training opportunities.
  • Ability to work as part of a team to deliver high quality and professional results.
  • Language Skills: Arabic; fluency in French or English (preferred)
  • Certificates or Licenses: Teacher Certificate/Teaching Certification (preferred)

 

Working Environment: classes will be held in or near ITS camps, either in Education tents or in refurbished buildings easily accessible to the communities. Classes will have 20-25 students per educator and facilitator.
