1) Rationale
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is in the process of designing and launching a new Remedial Program/Tutoring Program for marginalized Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. Materials have already been developed for Arabic, Math and English instruction, in two levels (beginner and intermediate). However, French materials have not yet been developed, and need to be adapted from existing English materials (teacher guides and lesson plans).
The purpose of this consultancy is, therefore, to recruit a short term (20 days) technical consultant for the adaptation of Remedial/Tutoring materials.
2) Objective
i) To lead in the adaptation of Remedial/Tutoring materials:
(1) Adapt current Tutor Guide-English into French (33 pages)
(a) Translation of overview and activities from English into French, with appropriate adaptation of instructional activities based on language differences
(2) Adapt existing weekly Scope and Sequence (in French)
(a) Reduce Scope and Sequence from 36 weeks to 21 weeks, to align with existing English Scope and Sequence (using English Scope and Sequence as a guideline for what needs to be delivered each week)
(3) Adapt tutor training materials into French
(a) Adapt Literacy and Numeracy handouts from the Tutor Training Manual
(4) Creation of lesson plans for 21 weeks of instruction
(a) Based on existing English lesson plans, translation, adaptation and finalization of lesson plans for 21 weeks of French class instruction (21 lesson plans, 1 lesson per week, 2 hours per lesson)
3) Methodology
a) Thorough review of existing English materials (tutor guide, lesson plans)
b) Thorough review of existing French materials (Scope and Sequence)
c) Coordination with Technical Advisor (remote) for guidance on process and on integration/adaptation overview
d) Adaptation/adjustment of materials
i) Tutor Guide (33 pages, plus Scope and Sequence)
ii) Scope and Sequence (21 weeks, to be inserted into tutor guide)
iii) Lesson Plans (21 lesson plans, to be inserted into tutor guide)
iv) Tutor Training Handouts
e) Combination of materials into one cohesive Tutor Guide
f) Review of materials by IRC’s Technical Advisor and Education Specialist
g) Integration of feedback/comments into guides
h) Final presentation of materials
i) Final sign off approval by IRC
4) Main Duties and Responsibilities
a) Reviewing of existing materials
b) Translation and adaptation of French materials (using English materials as guidance)
c) Delivery of cohesive and finalized Tutor Guide, after technical review and feedback
5) Qualifications Required
a) Experience in Education with specific and specialized experience in Early materials/lesson plan/curriculum development and/or design
b) Experience with educational materials development/and or design (specifically for the Syrian refugee student/child population)
c) Fluency in English and French
6) Deliverables
a) A full Tutor Guide, combining the elements of:
i) Tutor Guide (33 pages, plus Scope and Sequence)
ii) Scope and Sequence (21 weeks, to be inserted into tutor guide)
iii) Lesson Plans (21 lesson plans, to be inserted into tutor guide)
iv) Tutor Training Handouts (Literacy and Numeracy skills handouts)
7) Reporting line
Reports to the IRC Education Coordinator
8) Work location(s)
She/he will be housed at the IRC Beirut offices and/or offsite, as needed
9) Schedule :
Short-term contract (with deliverables as of March 31, 2016); 20 days (including weekends)
