General Goal: is to provide support to students, ensure they have access to necessary resources, and advocate for their needs in order to help them succeed academically and socially.
Job Responsibilities:
- Conduct individual assessments of students to identify academic, emotional, behavioral, or social issues that may hinder their success.
- Work with teachers, parents, and administrators to understand the student's situation and needs.
- Offer individual or group counseling to students dealing with issues such as bullying, family problems, or other struggles.
- Help students develop coping strategies, conflict resolution skills, and positive behaviors.
- Create personalized action plans to address specific student needs and track progress over time.
- Connect students and families to community resources, such as mental health services, food banks, or housing assistance.
- Refer students to outside agencies or specialists when necessary, and ensure follow-up for progress.
- Maintain detailed records of interactions, interventions, and student progress.
- Meet with parents, teachers, and administrators to review students’ progress and adjust strategies if needed.
- Respond to urgent situations involving students, such as mental health crises, abuse, or emergencies, ensuring the safety and well-being of the student.
- Provide immediate support and develop a long-term plan for managing the situation.
- Collaborate with teachers, school psychologists, case workers, and other professionals to create a supportive environment for students.
- Conduct sessions for parents on issues such as mental health, bullying prevention, or handling challenging student behaviors.
- Raise awareness about resources available within the school and the community.
- Ensure that all interactions with students, families, and school staff remain confidential and comply with legal and ethical standards.
Qualifications, Skills, and Personal Attributes
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, education, or a related field is often required.
- Previous experience working with children and families, particularly in a school or social service setting.
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Ability to build relationships with students, parents, and staff.
- Knowledge of community resources and support systems.
- Understanding of child development, mental health issues, and special education.
