Child Care Attendant

The Child Care Attendant is responsible for ensuring a safe, nurturing, and stimulating environment for children participating in the Makani program. The attendant will supervise and engage children through age-appropriate activities, promoting their well-being, learning, and development in line with UNICEF’s standards for child protection and early childhood care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct care and supervision to children (typically aged 0–6 years) attending the Makani center.
  • Ensure a safe and welcoming environment that supports children’s physical and emotional development.
  • Organize and lead age-appropriate activities, including play, storytelling, art, music, and basic learning exercises.
  • Support the early identification of children with developmental delays or protection concerns, referring cases as needed.
  • Maintain hygiene and safety standards in the child care area (e.g., handwashing, clean toys, sanitized play space).
  • Create inclusive environments that are culturally sensitive and responsive to the needs of vulnerable children.
  • Communicate with caregivers and parents when necessary, providing updates on the child’s activities or behavior.
  • Report any child protection concerns to the designated Child Protection Focal Point immediately.
  • Work collaboratively with Makani staff including facilitators, social workers, and case managers.
  • Participate in trainings and regular meetings as required by the project.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree Early Childhood Education or relevant field preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in child care or early childhood development.
  • Experience working with vulnerable children or in humanitarian contexts is a strong asset.
  • Familiarity with child protection principles and UNICEF’s core values.
  • Basic knowledge of child development stages and psychosocial support practices.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural, fast-paced environment.

Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) is everyone’s responsibility and all staff are required to adhere to the code of conduct, that enshrines the principles of PSEA, always (Both during work hours and outside work hours). Familiarization with, and adherence to, the code of conduct is an essential requirement of all staff, in addition to related mandatory training. All staff must ensure that they understand and act in accordance with this clause.
