Essential Responsibilities and Duties
- Operational Supervision
- Supervise the reception of whole blood units from collection sites to ensure proper identification.
- Supervise daily operations of whole blood processing, including separation into components (RBCs, plasma, platelets).
- Ensure accurate and timely labeling, storage, quarantine, and release of blood components as per SOPs.
- Verify that all materials, reagents, and equipment used are within their validity and appropriately calibrated or qualified.
- Compliance and Quality Assurance
- Ensure all preparation activities comply with GMP, AABB, EU Guidelines, Lebanese MOPH regulations, and internal QMS.
- Monitor component quality indicators (e.g., volume, hematocrit, plasma clarity).
- Conduct and document deviation reports, CAPA investigations, and change controls related to component preparation.
- Review and approve batch records, blood component worksheets, and equipment logs.
- Participate in internal audits and regulatory inspections. Support implementation of corrective/preventive actions.
- Training and Competency
- Train, mentor, and assess staff involved in blood preparation to ensure competency and compliance with SOPs.
- Develop and update training plans in collaboration with the Quality and Training Units.
- Ensure that only trained and authorized personnel handle component preparation activities.
- Documentation and Traceability
- Maintain complete, legible, and traceable records for every blood unit processed.
- Ensure component traceability from donation through distribution, including labeling and linkage with donation numbers/barcodes.
- Oversee document control related to the preparation area (SOPs, batch records, forms).
- Equipment and Environmental Monitoring
- Supervise the operation and maintenance of centrifuges, plasma expressers, sealers, scales, and refrigerators/freezers.
- Ensure periodic calibration, qualification, and preventive maintenance are carried out and documented.
- Oversee environmental monitoring (temperature, humidity, cleanliness) of the preparation and storage areas.
- Coordination with Other Units
- Liaise with the Collection, Quality Control, and Distribution Units to ensure proper workflow and timely availability of blood components.
- Coordinate with the IT and Data Management Unit to ensure electronic records (if applicable) are complete, secure, and compliant with data integrity requirements.
- Monitor daily stock levels of prepared RBCs and FFPs and report to distribution and stock management.
- Inventory and Supply Management
- Ensure availability of critical consumables and reagents (e.g., bags, filters, additive solutions).
- Monitor usage trends and communicate with inventory personnel to prevent stock-outs or overstocking.
10. Safety and Waste Management
- Enforce biosafety and infection prevention protocols during blood handling and processing.
Supervise the safe disposal of discarded or reactive units following biohazard procedures.
