Main Role The Laboratory Technician is responsible for donor related activities as well as management of “blood products” and testing  Operational Roles and Responsibilities Follow the” National Guidelines of good transfusion practices” - 2012 Receive donors in a friendly way and process them according to BTS procedures Enter donors demographic data and assign numbers to donors and donations Perform adequate donor selection through an adapted questionnaire and referring to list of medical contraindications to blood donation Collect whole blood from donor and give post donation care Process blood collected into components according to blood transfusion services procedure Perform mandatory tests on blood donations and enter results on log book and software Perform blood grouping on blood unit according to blood transfusion services procedure manual Put adequate labeling on blood products Store blood products according to blood transfusion services procedure manual Deliver blood products Adhere to the laboratory's quality control policies, document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed Maintain records and demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are run regularly Capable of identifying problems and correct it immediately and /or notify the director Document all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratories established performance specifications Follow continuous medical education program through active participation in educational programs of the department Keep inventories of supplies and stock on hand for laboratory use Complies with biohazard standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents and/or radiation sources in the workplace Participate in mobile blood drives Coordinate with hospitals if needed Help and orient patients to other blood centers Call donors from donors’ list available when needed Perform irradiation of blood products (Spears only)
