  Lebanon Reforestation Initiative Terms of Reference Mapping Component Intern   I. INTRODUCTION Project Background Information The Lebanon Reforestation Initiative (LRI) is a project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented by the United States Forest Service (USFS) that provides technical assistance and institutional support for sustainable native tree reforestation and wildfire management. With administrative offices in Beirut, LRI technical experts manage a multi-year work program of activities throughout Lebanon in collaboration with grassroots organizations and local communities.   II. REQUIREMENTS The Mapping intern should possess the following competencies and skills: Fluency in both written and spoken English and Arabic; Advanced computer literacy Currently studying or graduated in plant biology, systematics, agriculture, plant biodiversity, environmental studies or similar programs Fair knowledge of Lebanon’s native plant species (including trees, shrubs and plants) Basic GIS knowledge Availability 3-4 days a week Available to start as soon as possible Good organization and communication skills   III. BENEFITS OF THE INTERNSHIP The intern will learn advanced GIS and other remote sensing techniques The intern will develop a practical experience in data collection and remote sensing The intern will be able to learn about seedling production, reforestation practices, fire prevention and other mapping practices from different LRI project components The intern will conduct several field visits and will be exposed to different field conditions and visit different regions of Lebanon The intern will learn about species associations and distribution of plant species over the Lebanese landscape IV. EXPECTED OUTCOMES Data collected from a series of field visits on plant species The collected data will be used to update the vegetation classification of Lebanon and consequently the vegetation map of Lebanon. The intern is expected to help in all steps of the process Data should be organized and stored in one database, accessible for future users The intern is expected to keep clear and concise records of all activities undertake The intern is expected to develop an internship report at the end detailing the methodologies used and results obtained V.
