Job Summary
The Emergency Agriculture Engineer will work under a food security project implemented by WeWorld-GVC and Mada Association. Under the direct responsibility of the Project Manager, the Emergency Agriculture Engineer will be responsible for the project component of support to small-scale farmers, while also supporting on the fresh food distributions to vulnerable households through agricultural cooperatives. The Emergency Agriculture Engineer will:
- Conduct a detailed needs assessment of smallholder farmers in the target areas in Akkar and participate in the selection of 250 farmers to benefit from distributions;
- Lead on the distribution of input and equipment packages to smallholder farmers and provide technical support for their use;
- Conduct a harvest and post-harvest training to agricultural cooperatives providing fresh food baskets to vulnerable households under the project;
- Provide a 3-day training to smallholder farmers on good agricultural practices with focus on water management.
- Closely support the Field Officer working under the project during the distribution of fresh food baskets to vulnerable households.
- Support the component of establishment of small home gardens for beneficiaries as a pilot exit strategy from the food distributions.
The Emergency Agriculture Engineer will work closely with WeWorld-GVC’s team, the targeted farmers, cooperatives and suppliers throughout implementation.
The Emergency Agriculture Engineer will be based in Mada’s office in Tripoli with daily field visits to project sites.
Responsibilities and Tasks
- Ensure that the activities under his/her responsibility are delivered on time, and in line with the project proposal, timeline and logical framework
- Lead on the assessment of smallholder farmers (including developing the tools, conducting the field visits required, leading on any planned Focus Group Discussion, and entering and analyzing the data)
- Work with the Project Manager to develop a workplan for the packages’ distribution to farmers.
- Oversee the distribution of packages to farmers, ensuring proper crowd management.
- Conduct follow-up field visits to benefiting farmers to ensure proper use of packages and provide technical guidance and advice.
- Prepare the content and conduct trainings to cooperatives and farmers in close coordination with the Project Manager.
- Report to the Project Manager on a daily basis and submit weekly reports as required, highlighting risks and challenges and proposing mitigations and solutions
- Ensure that communication with the beneficiaries is clear, identify any bottlenecks and gaps and report back to the Project Manager
- Act as main technical focal point (agriculture) under the project, supporting the team to ensure quality standards are respected
- Support the Project Manager to conduct pesticide residue tests for the fresh produce provided by cooperatives and support in the analysis of results and further actions.
- Support the Project Manager to select households for the family gardens, establish the gardens and coach the households on their maintenance.
- Ensure proper archiving of all project documentation.
- Support the Project Manager based on need with any other tasks pertinent to other project components
Minimum Qualification and Experience
- Bachelor degree in Agriculture Engineering or equivalent degree/experience
- 2 to 3 years of experience in similar tasks, working with NGOs in the livelihoods, agriculture or food security sectors
- Experience in harvest and post-harvest practices is required
- Excellent organizational, coordination and time-management skills
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Previous experience in Akkar is preferred
- Valid driving license is compulsory.
