Gis Techician

Role and Responsibilities Working as an important member of a diverse team, the GIS technician will collate and analyse spatial data collected by the field team to produce interactive maps showing the distribution, density and growth of refugee tented settlements in the West and Central Bekaa regions.   Project Overview The conflict in Syria has erupted into a full-scale civil war endangering lives in almost every community in the country. Desperate families, caught in the crossfire, are leaving everything behind and fleeing into neighbouring countries. Lebanon, one of these countries, has received a large influx of refugees from Syria. To assist the arriving Syrian refugees, Medair’s team in Lebanon intends to implement an emergency shelter project with cash for work and mapping activities in the Bekaa Valley.   Medair Medair brings life-saving relief and rehabilitation in disasters, conflict areas, and other crises by working alongside the most vulnerable. Founded in 1989, Medair’s unwavering commitment continues to bring hope to the world’s most vulnerable.   Workplace Starting Date Contract Details Zahle and Beirut Lebanon ASAP until 31.12.2013     Key Activity Areas Communication Have regular and constant communication with the mapping community mobilisers Liaise with local communities on site where necessary Communicate implementation problems or issues to GIS Mapping Project Manager. Liaise with distribution team Liaise with other NGOs to collate data where needed Data Collection and Analysis Plan data collection with GIS Mapping PM and mapping team Coordinate data collection activities Compile, edit and analyse data to produce usable map Prepared and able to lead the project after an initial start-up and training phase. Quality Management Willingness to be trained in data collection procedures Follow recognised procedures for quality management in data collection Help the team set up procedures for data collection and digital storage Reporting Participate in the generation of the final reporting of the project via post implementation analysis   Qualifications University studies in engineering or similar subject   Languages Strong working knowledge of Arabic and English (spoken and written)   Experience / Competencies Minimum of 2 years experience in GIS data manipulation, GPS mapping Strong working knowledge of ArcGIS, of a a range of GIS packages Work experience in the Bekaa Valley region of Lebanon NGO experience desirable Strong communication skills Strong character traits-adaptability, ability to handle stress, sensitivity, honesty, integrity
