Laboratory Technician

MAIN OBJECTIVE OF POSITION

Main Purpose:

Perform clinical laboratory activities according to the MSF protocols, security and hygiene measures in order to obtain results to determine the patient’s treatment.

Accountabilities:

• According to medical prescription, prepare and perform clinical exams/tests with appropriate techniques and following the MSF protocols and procedures. This function includes, among others:  
  • Phlebotomy (neonates, children, and adults)
  • Perform PCR swabs
  • Perform laboratory exams (hematology, biochemistry, coagulation, serology, and microscopy).
  • Preparing and sending slides/samples for external quality control.
• Ensure proper reporting and registration of the sample results in order to keep a written track of activity in order to have a proper recording of laboratory activities and give information to the requesting physician, ensuring confidentiality.
• Take care, manage and organize efficiently the laboratory material/equipment:  
  • Apply hygiene and safety protocols, doing daily cleaning /maintenance, sterilization, washing general glassware after procedures are finished.
  • Ensuring proper sample waste disposal according to the hospital protocols and safety standards
  • Monitor and record laboratory consumable consumption, place orders, do stock, storage conditions follow-up, keep inventory. Ensuring that no material are taken out of laboratories without prior authorization and carrying out a proper storage system and conditions, inventory, etc.
  • Ensuring that the cold chain is maintained properly in Laboratory areas for both samples and reagents.
  • Being responsible for all required automatic instrument calibration and quality controls.
• Ensuring that the hygiene and safety protocols both for individual as well as for collective protection (i.e. required clothes and equipment, hygiene and universal precautions, etc.) are implemented in the Laboratory and that the cleaning personnel is informed about biohazards.
• Keep organized the data collection system of laboratory results. Compiling, analyzing and reporting on lab activities and results to the line manager, providing data on complications, the total number and types of tests and in general, any problem with the staff and / or laboratory material.
• Report all relevant information linked to the activity in the laboratory to the line manager, especially the loss/robbery/damage of laboratory equipment or consumables.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

• Essential Medical Laboratory Technician diploma /degree, with authorization to practice from the Lebanese Ministry of Health.

Experience

• Minimum 2-year working experience essential in all needed laboratory departments:
  • Phlebotomy (Neonates, children, and adults)
  • PCR swabs
  • Biochemistry, Hematology, coagulation, and serology
  • Urine and stool analysis. 

Languages

• Fluency in Arabic and English are mandatory.
