Accountabilities
- Know, promote, implement and follow the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment.
- Respecting patient and medical confidentiality at all times.
- Organise and carry out patient care and treatments according to the medical prescriptions, and assist during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures.
- Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
- Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Know and be aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit.
- Ensuring patients are properly received and orientated regarding routinue in the WHC set-up.
- Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
- Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed .
- Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
- Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities
During admission to WHC:
- Take the vital signs of every patient acording to the ward’s protocols, report any abnormalities to the MD on call.
- Distributes and administers the medication according to the prescription and MSF protocol.
- Performs the necessary procedures as needed and/or requested : IV line insertion, urinary catheterisation etc.
- Registers and completes the admission file
- Provides information to the patient and caretaker about the serivces available, hospital routinues and regulation (ward rounds, drug rounds, visiting hours)
During delivery-immedicate postpartum
- Collaborate with the midwife/gynaecologist during the second-fourth stage of labour in delivery room
- Take the fetal heart rate during the second stage, report and deficiencies immeidately and act accordingly
- Support the patient during the second stage of labour
- Receive the newborn from the MW / obstetrian post-delivery and provide immediate newborn care, registration and vaccination.
- If necessary assist in resuscitation of the newborn – as per training, and with the team
- Monitor newborns ad mothers during the fourth stage of labour, document findings and transfer to postpartum ward when stable. In complicated cases (PPH, instrumental deliveries etc), observe and record the vital signs – BP, PR, temp, RR, PV blood loss…
- Educate the mothers on the importance of breast feeding and support them in the intiation of feeding.
- Ensure proper discharge education is provided for both the mother and baby, and invite for follow up within the MSF structure during the postnatal period.
- Monitor the babies’breast feeding pattern and report to IPD supervisior /MD any problems.
- Collaborate and conduct ronds with the paediatrian /Obstetrian prior to discharge.
- For idenitifed higher risk infants follow MSF protocols and report abnormalities / change in condition to paediatrian.
Referral of high risk women / newborns
- Consult with the obstetrian /MW / paediatrian / referral nurse when referra is deemed necessary based on criteria. Prepare the patient/newborn accordingly and complete the required documentation.
- Inform family / caretaker accordingly
- Accompany patient / newborn when needed
Participates in the department related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance
- Perform handover of medicines and materials at every shift
- Ensure no materia lis removed from the nursing area / wards withour prior authorisation
- Checks that the medical equipment in the department functions properly (suction pump, BP machine pulse oximeter)
- Cleans and disinfects materials after each patient.
- Monitors and records the consumption of medical materials and supplies and participates in preparing the fortnightly order.
Hygiene / aspesis, waste disposal and stock keeping
- Ensure appropriate waste management and use appropriate containers and bins (sharps, medical waste, domestic waste)
- Follow cleaning and instrument sterilisation procedures
- Respect standard precautions and aspesis during procedures
- Awareness of PEP kit and follow up of AEB procedure
Additional Responsibilities
- Participate in collecting needed data for monthly medical reports
- Participate in the regular meetings of the medical team
- Rotation to OPD to ensure continuity of SRH (sexual and reproductive health) related activities.
- Participates in all training deliveredto the department and makes an ongoing effort to maintain and update obstetrical/medical/ paediatric knowledge and skills.
