Translation Unit Manager

CONTEXT

MSF Lebanon Branch like the other 20 MSF offices across the globe is part of the MSF international movement.

MSF Lebanon branch office is mainly located in Beirut with a satellite team in Egypt, coexist and collaborate with operations activities in both countries.

Our Communication department within the MSF Lebanon Branch and Cairo office is composed of 8 full time employees based between Beirut and Cairo.

From Lebanon and Egypt, we work regionally and contribute globally to MSF’s medical humanitarian response in their emergency and regular responses and interventions all over the world.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

The Translation Unit Manager is part of the Communications team in Beirut that works closely with other communications departments in the MENA (Dubai and Amman) to raise awareness on MSF in the MENA region and increase the Arabic footprint.

The Translation Unit Manager will process internal and external translation requests as well as take part in projects launched within the MSF movement

DETAILED RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage the translation unit and the translator/editor
  • Process translation requests and ensure that adequate quality control is conducted both for outsourced requests and texts translated in-house.
  • Process requests to and from English, French and Arabic, including, but not limited to: press and communications material, videos, posters, website and social media content, newsletter content, briefing papers and publications as well as documents related to the institution, such as legal documents, job descriptions, contracts, memorandums of understanding, protocols, medical reports, training materials, administrative papers, etc;
  • Coordinate and facilitate operational translation requests upon request from MSF teams, as well as MSF’s departments of Communications, Operations, legal, medical, humanitarian diplomacy, Training, HR, administration, logistics and MSF associations.
  • In coordination with translation colleagues in the region, manage translation requests coming from the MSF movement for communication purposes.
  • Maintain confidentiality of classified documents related to legal or security issues as requested by field missions or headquarters.
  • Participate in regular weekly and monthly meetings and on-call rosters.
  • Develop, feed and update the MSF Arabic terminology glossary and MSF style guideline.
  • Upon request, provide support during Emergency for extremely confidential data
  • Review the Arabic subtitles for the audio-visual material translated from English and French before being posted on MSF Lebanon social media platforms and MSF Lebanon website.
  • Revise & edit material translated internally to ensure accuracy, clarity, cohesion and conformity in language and with MSF terminology, standards, principles and practice.
  • Proof-read and review materials produced in Arabic by other MSF colleagues and departments
  • In collaboration with the communication staff, set publication standards and establish goals and expectations for MSF Arabic material and content for digital, print and audiovisual materials
  • In collaboration with communication staff, ensure MSF Arabic social media meets MSF editorial and style guidelines
  • Ensure compliance of content translated or produced by the communications team with MSF ethical guidelines and media laws to ensure respect for patients, MSF staff and partners
  • Maintain excellent relations with MSF’s communication and operations staff, to ensure a dialogue around MSF’s voice, style guide and editorial guidelines
  • Support in the creation of Arabic content to support MSF communication goals in the region
  • Proofread and edit final translated versions to manage consistency in all Arabic produced material, and provide feedback on the translation
  • Participate in meetings around Communications projects and contribute with ideas, input and feedback

Supervision and management                                                                

  • Build, manage and cultivate through trainings and regular feedback a pool of freelance translators, expert translators and agencies
  • Follow up on translation invoices and monitoring of translation budget
  • Provide quotations for translation services offered by various translators
  • Follow up on the budget allocated for translation
  • Support the Translator/Editor by outsourcing external public communications
  • Providing Translator/Editor with regular feedback
  • Ensuring that the document setting the ways of working within the Translation Unit is clear, updated when necessary and shared with other communications team members.
  • Support the Translator/Editor in setting and achieving their objectives and development goals

REQUIREMENTS

Education

  • Master's Degree in Translation

Experience

  • Minimum 2 years of experience managing translation projects

Competences

  • Fluency in Arabic and English Languages, French is an asset
  • Written and Verbal Communication
  • Understanding of Grammar
  • Accuracy and attention to Detail
  • Ability to Meet Deadlines and to Work under Pressure while maintaining the good quality of translation and proofreading
  • Knwledge in Trados Studio – Level 2 is an asset
