Anaesthsia Technician

Main Purpose Assist in organizing and carrying out anaesthesia activities for paediatric patients under 14 years of age at the Zahle Hospital Surgery Unit (pre-anaesthesia evaluation, administration of anaesthesia, recovery from anaesthesia, anaesthesia pharmacy, equipment and general service organization, etc.), according to MSF policies, protocols and universal hygiene standards, under the supervision of the medical anaesthetist and other medical staff, to ensure the quality of care provided to paediatrics patients.   Accountabilities Assist in pre-operative anaesthesia consultations for patients undergoing surgery, by verifying the consents for the planned procedure and anaesthesia, providing support for the patient and his/her family or care takers, and preparing for the type of anaesthesia to be used as determined by the anaesthetist. Assist in carrying out age-appropriate anesthesia care for patients under 14 years of age, consistent with his/her training and competence, in collaboration with the anaesthetist to ensure safe and adequate anesthesia during the procedure: Prepare beforehand the drugs, material, and equipment required; Administer and maintain anesthesia under the supervision of the anaesthetist following the established rules of hygiene and asepsis. Monitor patients throughout the intervention; Ensure, respect, and promote medical confidentiality of patients and their families. Provide post-operative care, including immediate post-operative monitoring in the recovery room (ensuring patient’s recovery of consciousness and implementing the analgesia protocol), and reporting changes in patient status to the supervising anaesthetist. Carry out all pharmacy-related activities in collaboration with the anaesthetist or anaesthesia activities manager (stock control, station’s re-stocking, inventories, expired drugs, etc.) and other equipment in perioperative area, doing special follow-up of narcotics and sedatives (register, consumptions, empty vials, etc.), ensuring adequate inventory and function to carry-out the anesthesia activities. Completes pharmacy orders according to needs. Collaborate with other departments within the project (responding to emergency department requests, intervening in other services when needed, etc.), in order to support the overall MSF project with his/her expertise, capabilities and areas of competence. Carry out administrative procedures and documentation (charting in the patient medical record, completion of forms, statistics, data base entry, etc.), in order to have updated and accurate information about the anaesthesia care provided and the day-to-day activities of the project. In collaboration with the anaesthetist, carry out quantitative surgical-anaesthesia data collection, completes and submits reports for the monthly follow-up of perioperative mortality and for the quality of anaesthesia/pain management, and inform immediately the direct supervisor in the event of medical error. Participates in quality improvement activities (morbidity and mortality reviews). ·         Support other medical services whenever needed and delegated by the anaesthetist, and work particularly in close collaboration with the emergency department and paediatric wards in airway management and resuscitation. When applicable, participate in the ongoing education/orientation of anaesthesia technicians. Implement and follow at all times hygiene rules, procedures and protocols, as well as maintaining the integrity of anesthesia equipment (decontamination, sterilization, storage conditions, etc.) and other supplies, in order to ensure the safety and protection of patients and other staff. Know accidental blood exposure policy and procedure and implement them when necessary. Never reuse syringes between patients under any circumstances.
