MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Give the job related care while respecting medical prescriptions and protocols that apply in the MSF service.
- Ensure admission of patients and follow up of labour and direct normal delivery with supervision.
- Carry out delivery with active management once training and competency adhered
- To support the midwife with prolonged deliveries in collaboration with the head midwife and the doctor: detect prolonged labour or delivery and signs of complication, prepare the patient for referral in case and accompany to a higher level of care. Administer certain medication with the agreement of the head midwife.
- Ensure post-natal follow up: deliveries and caesarean sections
- Assist midwife with new-born care/follow up:
Supervise new-born care daily (the carrying out of vaccination..)and the mothers in the maternity ward (Assist and support the mothers to follow Kangaroo care and breast feeding). In case of complications, carry out resuscitation of the new-born.
- Follow up with good documentation and reporting of any investigations, examination undertaken.
- Prepare the discharge of mothers and their babies:
Sanitary education of patients and possible treatment; emergency signs of post-partum complications...Complete and gather the patient’s file and hand over to the head midwife .
- Assist the midwife with in-patient and out-patient clinics and available tests.
- In emergency cases be the referral nurse to accompany the patient to higher level care and follow up of patient.
- Register and complete a hospitalisation file.
- Update the files of patients and new-borns.
- Hygiene / asepsis, waste disposal and stock keeping:
sterilisation procedures, patients/facility hygiene, maintaining medication and medical stock supplies.
- Participate in collecting needed data for monthly reports
- Upon request, The nurse-midwife can be sent to work in an other ward of the hospital: consultations of reproductive health (family planning, ante-natal, post-natal)
- Do rotational duties when necessary to assure 24/24 hours activity (including night duty).
