Main Purpose
Verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.
Accountabilities
- Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with local people.
- Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
- Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
- Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
- Translate MSF internal / external documents into local language(s).
- Keep record of all translated documents.
- Look after all equipment provided, i.e. dictionaries or other books that belong to MSF
- Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.
MSF Section/Context Specific Accountabilities
- Translate Medical Information verbally, accurately interpret and/or translate critical medical information between non-arabic speaking healthcare providers and patients.
- Translate Medical documents/text to patients, MSF staff and/or community.
- Maintain patient confidentiality in accordance with MSF medical ethics and protocals
- Assist with patient follow-up when requested including but not limited to contacting patients t oremind them of their appointment, assisting patients on the phone with follow-up phone calls and check-ins, accompanying patients to follow-up appointments, ect.)
- Establish positive interactions. As the main form of communication between a doctor and a patient, medical interpreters will strive to provide a positive and relaxing atmosphere so that patients feel comfortable discussing sensitive medical information
- Participate in trainings. As with all medical professionals, continued training is required to stay up to date on new medical information and terminology, which is highly important for effective translation of information.
Requirements
Education:
Essential: Diploma in English language.
Desirable: Bachelor of Arts in Translation & Interpretation.
Experience
Essential: At least 1-year of previous work experience as a medical interpreter in clinic/hospital setting
Languages
Essential: Fluency in English and Arabic languages
Desirable: Knowledge of the French language
