Mercy Corps responsibilities

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Workstation with computer, internal database and office resources
  • All other tools, materials and communication requirements for this project to be undertaken

PROJECT & INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION:

Mercy Corps is an international humanitarian and development organization working in over 40 countries worldwide helping people build secure, productive and just communities. In Jordan, Mercy Corps has been actively working since 2002 to implement a variety of programs funded by US and European governments and private donors. The current portfolio includes programs focusing on improved water demand management, conflict mitigation and social cohesion programming, child, youth and inclusive education programming, and humanitarian relief programming. 

The intern will work on the 3amaly program. Funded by the Canadian Government and implemented by Mercy Corps in Lebanon, “3amaly” is a livelihood program with focus on gender economic empowerment.  The program operates through three main components: 

    1. Creating opportunities and linking to jobs and on-the-job training for women and youth to access safe and decent employment or self-employment.
    2. Supporting MSMEs, Start-ups and new entrepreneurs to develop their businesses and address factors that are limiting their capacity to grow.
    3. Identifying and overcoming barriers that prohibit adolescent, youth and young adult females from entering the workforce.

 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

Through the internship, the intern will acquire:

  • Experience in working with big team on big livelihood program with diverse objectives
  • The capacity to look into program activities and identify successful interventions to develop stories of change and media posts
  • The ability to apply programs communication strategies and guidelines
  • The ability to design events, social media posts and printed material to serve the visibility and the outreach of development programs.
  • Exposure to NGO/donor coordination and reporting;
  • Increase knowledge and understanding of livelihood and development programming in humanitarian context.

 

DELIVERABLES:

  • Support 3amaly team, including the Component leads, Program Manager, Project Manager and M&E staff, to identify and define communication strategies to engage key target audiences
  • Create monthly calendars that include specific program-related communications activities, including events, campaigns, training, etc.;
  • Support program visibility within the community through material development and social media
  • Support in the development and design of digital and printed visibility materials
  • Assistance in drafting and preparing press releases and stories from the field;
  • Attending and summarizing conferences and meetings;
  • Assist 3amaly team to capture and document evidences for the field activities by visiting during the implementation of program’s activities.
  • Supporting the production of some design material if needed;

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Diploma: Bachelor degree (or final year university studies) in Media and communications, Graphic Design, Production or any other related field.
  • Experience: This is a learning opportunity for juniors and fresh graduates. Experience in the nonprofit or international development sector is a plus
  • Languages: Very strong written and oral communication skills in both English and Arabic (Arabic is strongly required)
  • Communication and reporting skill levels: Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed, Strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills
  • Interpersonal skills: Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, demonstrates initiative and ability to work independently and as a member of a team to meet program needs
  • Computer skills: Excellent Microsoft Office skills, Intermediate Adobe creative (Photoshop, and Illustrator) skills, strong grasp of social media management and campaign development

 

Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
