Purpose / Project Description:
Currently, the Water, Sanitation, & Hygiene (WaSH) sector at Mercy Corps Lebanon has the opportunity of providing training for those who are interested in learning about humanitarian work, focusing specifically on WaSH programming. Apart from the dedicated overview sessions, the traineeship will be immersive, allowing the trainee to shadow key program staff in their regular daily work. Furthermore, the trainee will be expected to deliver, with extensive support from program staff, an output which will benefit the quality of programming. In the interest of adapting the traineeship to the trainee’s expectations, they will be given the choice to focus on one or more of the following outputs:
➢ Upgrading the water quality monitoring and assurance system, focusing on on-site household-level treatment technologies (cross-grant);
➢ Upgrading the hygiene promotion intervention methodology, focusing on gender mainstreaming
➢ Supporting the implementation of innovative pilot latrine facilities, focusing on the development of a monitoring system for environmental parameters (Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation);
➢ Exploring alternative refugee settlement site improvement intervention methodologies, focusing on solid-waste management solutions (cross-grant).
Learning Objectives:
➢ Introduction to humanitarian work;
➢ Overview of the WaSH sector;
➢ Familiarization with different staff functions within Mercy Corps’ WaSH sector;
➢ In-depth understanding of WaSH programming logic;
➢ Immersive experience in shadowing key staff;
➢ Capacity building to deliver outputs which contribute to the quality of Mercy Corps WaSH programming.
Timeframe / Schedule:
2 months: Anticipated from mid March 2016 until mid May 2016 - flexible and adaptable attendance requirements
The Trainee will have the exposure to meet with the different departments during the training period
Suggested Timeline
Week 1:
➢ Overview of humanitarian work and readings on humanitarian principles;
➢ Overview of the WaSH sector and readings on international WaSH standards;
➢ Overview of Mercy Corps’ WaSH sector;
➢ Workflow walk-through;
➢ Exposure to program documents and tools.
Week 2:
➢ Overview of UN grant WaSH programming - UNICEF;
➢ Shadowing WaSH Project Manager;
➢ Field Visits - Bekaa Informal Settlements.
Week 3:
➢ Overview of WaSH innovation programming - BMGF;
➢ Shadowing WaSH Project Manager;
➢ Field Visits - Bekaa pilot unit locations.
Week 4:
➢ Overview of WaSH & Protection integrated programming - BPRM;
➢ Shadowing WaSH Project Manager;
➢ Field Visits - South Lebanon Informal Settlements.
Week 5:
➢ Overview of WaSH Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E);
➢ Shadowing WaSH M&E Coordinator;
➢ Introduction to Tola;
Weeks 6 to 8:
➢ Further exposure into relevant programming component.
Week 9:
➢ Piloting of outputs.
The timeline is flexible and may be adapted or extended before or during the traineeship.
