Job purpose:
NRC has been providing assistance to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon since mid-2011. Reflecting the initial immediate needs identified, NRC provided mainly shelter solutions to refugees from Syria, starting in the Akkar region in the North and then expanding into the Bekaa Valley in the East. Through its shelter work, assessments conducted and coordination with other stakeholders, NRC identified the educational and protection needs of the Syrian refugee communities. These include (a) protection/legal concerns; (b) information and counseling needs; (c) social concerns; and (d) educational/recreational needs.
Having identified a number of educational and protection needs and, from its previous experience of community centers for Iraqi refugees, NRC developed the idea of establishing community centers in order to provide services for refugees from Syria in a structured and consistent manner. Currently, NRC has one community centre for its Syrian response in each of three locations: (1) Rama, Akkar Region; (2) Saadnayel, Central Bekaa; and (3) Aarsal, Northern Bekaa. NRC is currently in the process of establishing a similar community centre in Baalbek.
Each Community Centre provides a safe and secure space in which refugees from Syria (including Palestinian refugees, other refugees and Lebanese returnees) and Lebanese beneficiaries from the host communities may access a range of education and protection services. NRC will establish two Community Centres for displaced Syrians in Lebanon. This project reaches out to Syrian families in and around the areas Saadnayel and Aarsal in the Bekaa Valley/Lebanon. NRC seeks to provide information and counselling services relating to access to services; legal status and other related matters. NRC also aims to strengthen the understanding of any protection issues faced by those displaced and, in coordination with other actors, identify ways to address these issues.
This position will be responsible for the day to day running of the centre and supervision of the centre’s staff.
