Org. Setting and Reporting
This post is located within the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa. The incumbent will report directly to the project manager at the Regional Office and will be under the overall supervision of the Regional Representative.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will assist in executing the Office’s work programme, monitoring human rights violations, analyzing legal documents and institutions and co-ordinating relevant technical cooperation activities. The incumbent will be primarily responsible for: Maintaining awareness of current human rights issues, to include relevant political and legal developments in the country concerned. Research and collect information pertaining to human rights matters from a variety of data sources (e.g. communications, publications, the press) to keep abreast of issues/events and provide up-to-date information; assist in the analysis of information in assigned country(ies). Analysis of legal provisions in legal codes and highlight areas of agreement and disagreement with international human rights. Examining court documentation and assess compliance with international of fair trials standards. Drafting variety of reports and correspondence relating to human rights matters. Providing objective human rights analyses and drafting reports and communications as required; providing ad hoc briefing notes on the situation of human rights in countries within the Region. Reviewing human rights issues, including gender considerations, and participates in discussions with other Human Rights Officers (HROs). Participating with other HROs in discussions with relevant authorities and other influential actors with the aim of stopping or preventing human rights violations or seek other remedial action by the authorities to prevent similar violations occurring in the future. Participating and serving as a resource person on human rights related issues. Assisting the regional Office in implementing research on certain topics/ countries to ensure the efficient and timely delivery of outputs and the preparation of reports in line with the agreement signed with the donor. Performing additional tasks as required.

Advanced University degree preferably in law, political science, international relations or other disciplines related to human rights. A first level university degree in combination with two more years qualifying work experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
