1. Music for Development – Music Consultant in Lebanon

Objectives:

The goal of the project would be aiming to give full agency for youth and adolescents for them to be leading change in their communities instead of being beneficiaries and receiving services. They would be mobilized and equipped with music tools (creating instruments, composing and basic music theory), which would allow them to express their understanding about social and human rights issues. Music visualization through graffiti would be used as an additional tool to support youth and adolescents in their campaigns. The main outcomes of the project are:

  1. Improved life skills through music for development and music activities for youth coaches and children.
  2. Youth and adolescents address rights and advocacy issues through the use of music and graffiti.

Right to Play Lebanon seeks a dynamic music consultant to support the team in carrying out several consultancies in Beirut area (manual development, workshop trainings, supporting communities during the activities, creating instruments etc..). The Lebanon Junior Consultant is expected to support in several phases of the project starting August 2018 until July 2019.

 

Process:

The project is a one year pilot, starting August 2018 until July 2019, which focuses on using music as a tool to promote social change and enhancing youth’s life skills. The project will take place at: Nabaa area, Tareek Jdeede, Khandaa Ghamee’, and Chiyah. The project consists of several activities of which the music consultant will support in the following:

 

  • Phase I will include developing a music for development manual over 2 months. In this phase, the consultant will work with the team on identifying and creating games which teach a music skill and a life skill simultaneously.
  • Phase II will include 1 selection workshop in which an average of 30 community members will attend over two days. A total number of 20 participants will be selected to become the coaches in the project. The music consultant will support in creating the activities required for the project and help in identifying eligible coaches.
  • Phase III will include a music for development workshop. The 20 selected coaches will participate and gain the required skills needed to transfer to the adolescents later on. The consultant will lead two days of the training.
  • Phase VI will include following up with the coaches over a course of one month to ensure quality of the sessions. Each coach will have to be visited once which results in 20 visits in total.
  • Phase V will include two final events. One will be held in Baalback citadel and one will take place on the rooftops of buildings in one of the identified areas. The consultant will support over a course of 4 days in finalizing the music compositions produced by the youth and identifying the needed systems and resources for the events.

 

2. EXPECTED TASKS AND DELIVERABLES OF JUNIOR CONSULTANT

The duration of this project is 11 months (August 1, 2018 to July 31, 2019). The music consultant in Lebanon will work under the guidance of the Project Officer in Lebanon and the Program Manager in the country office. He/she will be supported by RTP Leb staff during the project. The overall activities and deliverables for the music consultant are:

- Creating music for development manual content 

- Preparing activities and leading the selection workshops

- Preparing activities for the music for development workshop

- Providing an evaluation report after  1- month observation

- Visiting the 20 coaches and the 300 adolescents for finalizing the productions/Accompanying the 20 coaches and 300 adolescents during the rehearsals for the final event/studying the venues in which the events will take place/Identifying the required systems for the events. This will take place over 4 days

 

 

3. ABOUT THE CANDIDATE

Ideal candidates should have

  • A background in music and proven experience of working with youth on using music for developing skills.
  • Strong facilitation skills, particularly with regards to working with vulnerable groups
  • Experience in creating instruments from daily-life supplies.
  • Communication Skills: Well developed written and oral communication skills, including fluency in English and Arabic
  • Interested in Right to Play
  • Demonstrated understanding and support of principles of equity, participation and inclusion
