Call for Transcription and translation Expert

Background: The Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung (RLS) is an internationally operating non-profit institution that has become a provider of political education and a center for progressive social research in both Germany and throughout the world. RLS promotes critical analysis of society, and supports transnational, emancipatory and solidarity networks that strive for democratic and social participation and empowerment.

RLS is working in Lebanon since 2017. The Beirut office currently works within Lebanon, Syria and Iraq as its main countries of cooperation (in close cooperation with local partner institutions, groups, and individuals on site). . RLS also analyzes developments in Iran.

Scope of Work: The Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung seeks an experienced transcription and translation expert based in Iraqi Kurdistan, with a university degree in social sciences to work with our primary researcher and Program manager in the Slemani Governorate, Kurdistan. The consultant will translate, transcribe, interpret and produce content for our field assignments and works in the Kurdistan Region in Iraq. The consultant will be responsible for analyzing raw visual and written field data and translation and preparation of academic research content.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Convert raw Kurdish audio-visual interviews and data into academic text.
  • Experience in data entry and analysis
  •  Translate Kurdish content of videos and reels into English
  • Ability to produce English academic standard written text from Kurdish
  • Transcribe and translate Kurdish audio-visual data into text
  • Translate Kurdish and English articles
  • Translate Kurdish and English interviews
  • Flexible to work on demand and deliver assignments on time 
  • A university degree in Social Sciences or a related field, and a minimum of two years of professional experience in transcription and translation.
  • Fluency in Kurdish (mother tongue) and English (writing), Arabic is a plus.Terms of assignment: The consultant will be expected to work on demand to prepare materials and posts for publication and deliver the required tasks over a one-year period.

Application Requirements:

  •  CV detailing relevant experience.
  • Cover letter explaining suitability for the consultancy.
  • Sample translation: A short piece (approx. 200–300 words) translating Kurdish to English or English to Kurdish.
  • Sample transcription: A short audio/video file (1–2 minutes) transcribed accurately.

Proposal Evaluation: 

The candidate will be evaluated according to RLS regulations and criteria. Proposals will be scored based on the following criteria:

  • Transcription and Translation Experience (40%)
  • Expertise concerning food sovereignty, farming or related field (20%)
  • English language and written skills (40%)

Financial Terms: RLS will engage the selected candidate as an independent consultant for a period of one year. The consultant will be remunerated at a rate of $25 per hour for tasks assigned, with an expected workload of up to 10 hours per month.
