Research Consultant

PROJECT BACKGROUND Under the direct supervision of the Project Manager, the Consultant will be responsible for conducting information gathering on the situations of adolescents displaced to Saida and completing the research report.  The research objectives are two-fold: 1. To understand the situations of adolescents living in Saida, focusing on protection concerns, education and capacity development opportunities and participation. 2. To conduct initial scoping on challenges and opportunities for enhancing protection and promoting participation of adolescents at the community level, including possibilities for supporting capacity development activities for adolescents.   KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY This research should take a total of 20 days in Beirut and Saida, Lebanon. Research is expected to be undertaken in October 2017. The key roles and responsibilities for the Consultant are: Conducting desk review and coordinating with relevant SCI staff members Designing data collection tools Building capacity of SC staff members who will be involved in consultations with adolescents Collecting data in the field and organizing information gathered Analyzing the data           Drafting the research report        Finalizing the research report based on the feedback received by SCI staff members   OBJECTIVES and OUTPUT  The following deliverables are expected over the course of the research: Preliminary desk review Research tools (i.e. survey questionnaire) Focused group discussion notes with adolescents Draft and final report, including: executive summary; key findings; recommendations Any other data relevant to the research The report also elaborates recommendations to Save the Children which will include:  Interventions to increase adolescents’ capacity in light of the study’s findings Short-term and long-term solutions to address adolescents’ protection concerns   COMPETENCIES Delivering results Takes personal responsibility and holds others to account to deliver our ambitious goals for children, continually improving own performance or that of the team/ organization.  Applying technical and professional expertise Applies the required technical and professional expertise to the highest standards; promotes and shares best practice within and outside the organization. Experience in conducting research with at-risk adolescents and families Experience in community mobilization and conducting outreach activities. Understanding of social welfare systems and child protection mechanisms. Fluency in written and spoken Arabic, and either English (desirable) or French. Ability to write reports, based on the data collected Ability to work under pressure and willingness to work flexible hours in the event of major emergencies. Commitment  to  and  understanding  of  Save  the  Children’s  aims,  values  and principles  including rights-based approaches.
