The Deminer is responsible for identifying, marking, and safely clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) in affected areas. The role directly contributes to ensuring the safety of local communities and supporting the humanitarian goal of removing the threat posed by mines and ERW.

Key Responsibilities

Mine Action Operations

  • Conduct safe and correct clearance as directed by the HMA Team Leader, in accordance with SHEILD SOPs, training received, Technical Notes and NMAS/IMAS.
  • Mark hazardous areas and report findings to supervisors.
  • Assist in the safe removal or destruction of mines and UXOs, following established procedures.
  • Work in a team to clear minefields and affected areas in compliance with safety protocols.

Safety and Risk Management

  • Adhere strictly to safety protocols to minimize risks to oneself, teammates, and the local population.
  • Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly such as, helmets, visors, gloves and eyes protection, and ensure PPE is in good condition, regularly cleaned, and checked.
  • Participate in safety briefings and CASEVAC to ensure readiness for emergency situations.

Team Collaboration 

  • Work effectively within a team under the supervision of Site Supervisors and Team Leaders.
  • Communicate clearly and efficiently within the team and with local stakeholders.

Community Interaction

  • Respect local customs, languages, and cultural norms while working in the community.
  • Support mine risk education (MRE) initiatives where applicable.

Reporting

  • Report daily progress, challenges, and incidents to the Team Leader or Site Supervisor.
  • Provide accurate information on cleared areas and items found.
  • Ensure compliance with SHEILD SOPs and national/international mine action standards.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Minimum Age: 18 years.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent; military/technical background is an asset.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to work in demanding conditions (long distances, carrying equipment, extreme weather).
  • Mental Fitness: Ability to remain calm, precise, and resilient under pressure.
  • Experience: Previous demining experience preferred; new recruits will undergo training.
  • Training/Certification: Must successfully complete a recognized demining training course meeting NMAS/IMAS standards.
  • Other Requirements:
    • Willingness to wear and work in PPE.
    • Clean criminal record.
    • Pass medical and psychological fitness checks.
    • Proficiency in Arabic (English is an asset).
    • Respectful and culturally sensitive when working in communities.

Working Conditions

  • Deployment: Work in remote and hazardous areas affected by mines/ERW.
  • Field Conditions: Exposure to extreme weather, rough terrain, and limited infrastructure.
  • Work Schedule: Full-time; flexibility required for long hours, overtime, or emergencies.
  • Travel: Daily movement to and from operational sites may be required.
