Background Information/Organizational Context
UNHCR Sub-Office Zahle is located in the Bekaa valley in eastern Lebanon, which hosts over 320,000 registered refugees. Living conditions for refugees in Bekaa are extremely challenging, with some 40% of refugees residing in informal tented settlements scattered across the region. The deepening socio-economic crisis in Lebanon has further increased protection risks and vulnerabilities among refugees. Around 94% of refugees in the Bekaa are estimated to live below the Survival Minimum Expenditure Basket (SMEB) (VASyR 2021). GBV is on the rise, and refugee children are at heightened risk of exposure to worst forms of child labor, child marriage and other forms of violence.
The Community-Based Protection (CBP) Unit is part of the broader Protection Unit of Sub-Office Zahle. CBP covers programming for Persons with Specific Needs, Child Protection, Gender-Based Violence, Mental Health and Psychosocial support programming as well as Community Mobilization. The main role of the unit is to ensure that all refugees at heightened risk or victims of violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation have access to support systems and case management and to strengthen community-based approaches to protection.
By undertaking this internship, the intern will gain insight on what programming for community-based protection, persons with specific needs, child protection and gender-based violence consists of and familiarize her/himself with the existing strategies, tools, programs and projects on the thematic areas mentioned above. The intern will also have the chance to directly work on existing prevention activities for refugee men, women, girls and boys in UNHCR. The intern will also strengthen his/her skills in understanding data collection mechanisms including data analysis to support decision-making by the technical experts.
