Background Information/Organizational Context

UNHCR is currently offering an internship opportunity within the Protection Unit in its Field Office in Tyre, Lebanon. The internship is an opportunity for those wishing to gain exposure to UNHCR’s protection work, and to sharpen their professional skills. As a member of the Protection Unit, the intern will have the opportunity to support programmes that help protecting refugees and other persons of concern to UNHCR in Lebanon. An internship with UNHCR aims to offer students and recent graduates the opportunity to gain experience in the humanitarian sector in an international environment, in line with their academic studies or future work in a field related to UNHCR’s mission. UNHCR is looking for talented, motivated, and passionate individuals from Lebanon for this position, who bring their knowledge, analytical thinking and different ideas to enhance our capacity to serve people of concern to the organization. The internship start date is flexible but should commence between July to December 2022, for a period of six months. The intern will support the Protection team with several important aspects of its work. In the course of their internship they will acquire the following: 

Knowledge of UNHCR’s protection activities in Lebanon; 

Knowledge of UNHCR’s policies and their practical implementation; 

Experience in working directly with refugees (incl. interviewing, monitoring), data collection and report drafting.

The successful candidate will be based with the team in UNHCR’s Field` Office in Tyre,  Lebanon. The internship is a six-month full-time role with 40 working hours per week, from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday. Office presence will be required but may vary depending on the measures adopted by the GoL and guidance of UNHCR regarding the COVID-19 situation.  

The terms of internship, as defined by UNHCR practice, include the payment of a Food and Local Transportation Allowance (FLTA). In case the intern is sponsored by another source during the internship this will be deducted from the FLTA.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Assist in Community-Based Protection activities, including supporting in providing information to the community structures, including Outreach Volunteers, Community Groups and Community Centers, and analyzing information and feedback from the persons of concern on the UNHCR program and activities.

Assist the Education activity, including in liaising with other units and partners in processing education referrals, compiling and organizing education data, and analyzing education trends and statistics.

Assist the Protection Unit with other tasks, as requested

The ideal candidate will have:
Demonstrable interest in refugee protection
Background in Community Development/Social Work, Development Studies, Social Sciences, Education, Political Sciences, Communication, International Relations, Public Information and Administration, Law, or related areas;
Good organizational and communication skills, in addition to Attention to detail, determination to meet deadlines and flexible and positive attitude;
Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic (written/oral/comprehension) with developed writing skills;
Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.


Eligibility
In order to be considered for an internship, candidates must meet the following eligibility criteria:
Be a recent graduate (those persons who completed their studies within one year of applying) or current student in a graduate/undergraduate school programme from a university or higher education facility accredited by UNESCO.
Have completed at least two years of undergraduate studies in a field relevant or of interest to work of the Organization.
Be Lebanese national or hold valid residency in Lebanon at the time of application and throughout the internship period
An individual whose father, mother, son, daughter, brother or sister is a staff member of UNHCR, including a Temporary Appointment holder or a member of the Affiliate Workforce, is not eligible for an internship.
