South Sudan Situation: UNHCR External Update #1 (February - June 2025)

Highlights

▪ Escalating violence and conflict in South Sudan since February 2025 have triggered renewed displacement and growing humanitarian needs across the region. The situation has further deteriorated due to a mix of factors, including surging food and commodity prices, recurrent extreme weather events, and declining humanitarian funding.

▪ Since the start of the conflict, some 139,000 people have sought refuge in neighboring countries, including an estimated 23,000 in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), about 35,000 in Ethiopia, 58,000 in Sudan, and around 23,000 in Uganda. Within South Sudan, approximately 199,000 people have been newly displaced in various locations affected by conflict, bringing the total of newly displaced in 2025 in South Sudan to 337,000.

▪ UNHCR is seeking $36.25 million to strengthen preparedness and deliver initial life-saving protection and assistance to new internally displaced persons (IDPs) in South Sudan and up to 303,000 new refugees, asylum seekers, and returnees in neighboring countries.

▪ UNHCR has declared an internal Level 2 emergency for Ethiopia and Sudan due to the escalating crisis in South Sudan, which will remain in force for six months until November 2025.
