Yemen: Heavy Rains and Flooding, Situation Update No. 01

HIGHLIGHTS

  • More than 50,600 households (approximately 354,400 people) in 19 governorates have been affected by heavy rains and flooding since 1 August. This includes 157 reported casualties, including 62 fatalities and 95 injuries.
  • Widespread damage has been reported to infrastructure, housing and shelters, health facilities, schools, water and sanitation systems, and livelihoods. Protection risks have increased, including due to the displacement of landmines and explosive remnants of war (ERW).
  • Area-based responses are ongoing in the affected areas, which are being coordinated by the Regional Coordination Teams (RCTs). Since 1 August, 17 partners have assisted more than 21,421 households (approximately 149,900 people) with at least one form of life-saving assistance.
  • Critical gaps persist across all sectors, due mainly to funding shortfalls as well as physical access constraints, warehousing limitations and inadequate stocks across all sectors, particularly for WASH, shelter and non-food items.
