WFP Lebanon: Livelihoods and Resilience - Flood Management | Strengthening Resilience in Semmaqiyeh, Akkar (January 2026)

Semmaqiyeh village, nestled between the Al-Kabir and Al-Ostuene rivers in North Akkar, has long suffered from recurrent flooding that devastates agricultural lands, isolates communities, and undermines livelihoods. The hydraulic complexity of the area – marked by low-lying terrain, narrow drainage corridors, and transboundary water dynamics – has historically rendered flood mitigation efforts difficult and fragmented.

In response, WFP, in coordination with local stakeholders and CARE, implemented a targeted flood management intervention under its livelihood program. The initiative focused on enhancing the Saroud channel’s conveyance capacity through structural upgrades, aiming to protect farming households, preserve mobility, and reduce the socio-economic toll of seasonal floods.
