Background
USAID’s “Quality Instruction towards Access and Basic Education Improvement” (QITABI -2) is a five-year program seeking to improve learning outcomes for all students in public primary schools in Lebanon. Its activity targets an estimated 200,000 girls and boys, including those who are registered in second shifts of public schools.
World Learning has an immediate consultancy named “Mathematics Consultant” for the USAID-funded Quality Instruction Towards Access and Basic Education Improvement (QITABI-2) in Lebanon.

Scope and Responsibilities
The consultant will work closely with World Learning’s Beirut office Mathematics Specialist, to contribute in recommending best practices within a Holistic Learning Approach (HLA) for teaching Math in grades 1 -6 (Cycles 1 & 2) schools using the Lebanese curriculum.
The consultant will be reporting to the World Learning Mathematics Specialist in Lebanon. S/he will collaborate closely with home office SEL Senior Education Specialist as well as World Learning Numeracy Team and report timely on all deliverables.
The consultant will be able to:
- Provide a detailed and comprehensive literature review about the current teaching and learning methods of Mathematics in Lebanon public and private schools;
- Contribute in writing, compiling and reviewing reports on the Education status in Lebanon and other countries implementing international best practices for teaching and learning;
- Contribute in analyzing the curriculum scope and sequence, lesson plans, and formative assessments for Grades 1-6 based on the Math national curriculum of Lebanon and international practices;
- Participate in developing formative, summative, and curriculum - based assessment tools (CBA) and Early Grade Math Assessment (EGMA), for Grades 1-6;
- Develop lesson plans and activities for inclusion for Grades 1-6 within the framework of Universal design for Learning (UDL);
- Work closely with QITABI 2 team and partners to ensure social and emotional learning is embedded in the Math curriculum and Early Grade Math Assessment (EGMA) tools.
Note: Reporting and payment shall be done periodically every 3 weeks if deliverables are presented as requested by QITABI 2.
The consultancy duration: 70 days extending between December 2019 and July 2020
Required Qualifications
- PhD in education, with a focus on teaching Math in elementary classrooms (grades 1-6) or equivalent
- Fluency in Arabic and English languages and excellent writing skills in English
- Knowledge of French is an advantage
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in teaching and designing curricula for Math in elementary grades (1-6) in Lebanon
- Knowledge of the national Math curriculum in the elementary years
- Knowledge of classroom-based assessment systems
- Research oriented and has participated in conducting studies
- Able to travel in Lebanon for conferences/meetings
- Ability and willingness to participate in teamwork
- Ability to work on multiple tasks and flexibility with project demands
Preferred qualifications:
- Teacher training experience
- Knowledge of research skills and data analysis, both quantitative and qualitative
- Knowledge of some international best practices for teaching and learning in general, and Math in specific
