The Legal Agenda is seeking to hire a full-time socio-legal research assistant.
The Legal Agenda (LA) is a Beirut-based nonprofit research and advocacy organization with offices in Lebanon and Tunisia and correspondents in several other Arab countries. It was established in December 2009 by a group of legal professionals, scholars, and human rights activists who institutionalized their efforts to build a critical and multidisciplinary approach to law and justice in Arab countries with a special focus on political, civil, social, and economic rights.
Roles and Responsibilities:
The candidate will assist the senior researcher in the socio-legal research unit at the Legal Agenda. He/she will:
- Identify, analyze and synthesize relevant:
- Law and social sciences books and articles as well as legal/social documents (different corpuses and archives, etc.) in Arabic, English and French
- Newspaper articles or/and other similar writing material in Arabic, English and French
- Legal documents and other forms of grey literature
- Co-write and write their own articles in Arabic for publication on the Legal Agenda website
- Conduct fieldwork and interviews in different social settings, but mostly in legal spaces (courts, justice palaces, lawyers’ offices, etc).
- Transcribe research interviews and other fieldnotes.
- Participate in meetings and take minutes as needed.
Skills and Experience:
- Degree in Social Science or Humanities. MA is a plus.
- Law degree (preferred).
- Excellent reading, writing and speaking in Arabic. Reading and speaking in English. Reading in French.
- Knowledge and interest in legal and judicial issues, organizations and procedures.
- Experience in qualitative research. The candidate should master basic fieldwork methods (e.g. ethnography, interviews, observation, archival research).
- The candidate should also have excellent note-taking skills.

- 1+ years of experience in Socio-Legal research
