Wrapping up a visit to Syria on Monday, UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, appealed to the international community for bold and decisive action to help Syrians rebuild their war-torn country and support displaced Syrians in returning home.

The Syria crisis entered its fourteenth year in March 2024. The UN estimates that 16.7 million people need humanitarian assistance across the country – a 9 per cent increase from 2023.

As of 23 January, UNHCR estimates that nearly 210,000 Syrians have crossed back into Syria since 8 December.

This year represents an extremely precarious moment in Lebanon’s history, with crisis upon crisis affecting the country’s social, economic, and environmental stability.

As of 27 December, 664,000 people remain newly displaced inside Syria since the beginning of December, 75% of whom are women and children.

In support of the Government led emergency response, the humanitarian community launched a Flash Appeal to enable partners to rapidly deliver humanitarian assistance. The appeal seeks $425.7 million to assist 1 million people affected by the crisis until the end of the year.
